IMG Surgical Careers Programme 2024

Are you an international graduate considering a surgical career in the NHS? 

The IMG Surgical Careers Programme 2024 is a bespoke career development initiative for international graduates seeking to enter surgical training in the UK. Successful applicants benefit from free one-to-one mentorship supporting portfolio and professional development as well as access to free career events. Candidates will have the opportunity to apply for subsidised travel to the events.

Candidate Requirements

  • International Graduate (IMG) with eligiblity to work in the UK i.e. completion of PLAB Exams/GMC registered
  • Applying to Core Surgical Training (CST) within the next two years.
  • Less than 18 months post-foundation surgical experience (by the time of application to specialty training). 

Programme Benefits

  1.  Allocation of personal surgical mentor for one-to-one mentorship
  2. Portfolio and CST application support
  3. Funded career events (including travel subsidisation)

What's this about career events?

Successful applicants will have access to four career events over the course of 2024, two virtual and two in-person. Live events will have travel subsidisation opportunities. 

Topics covered will include; sub-specialty surgical career talks, portfolio development, application and interview preparation. 

Dates are still TBC. Here is an outline of the events:

– February 2024 – Virtual event – Careers in Surgery

– April/May 2024 – Live event – Surgical skills

– July/August 2024 – Virtual event – Portfolio Development (QI/Leadership/Education)

– October 2024 – Live event – CST Application/Interview preparation

Are you a core surgical trainee with a passion for leadership, medical education and mentorship? 

You could make an ideal candidate for our IMG mentees regardless if you studied and trained in the UK or not. We provide a free platform for you to deliver mentorship to clinicians who really need your help in adapting to the NHS, developing their portfolio and applying for surgical training. We also provide free training in a hybrid format to help you excel in mentorship, even if this is your first time providing it!
